Ed Ries off the Mark.....again

I have tried to take Ed Ries with a grain of salt over the years. He seems to flip flop a lot on issues and his tone often suggests that he and he only is the most suitably informed to offer opinions on how we should live and evolve in South Delta.

In his latest navel gazing exercise Ries has failed to consider how South Delta and Tsawwassen in particular are expected to move on in other generations beyond Ries’s which is, with no disrespect, at the top end of the demographic.

To a first time homebuyer or a senior wishing to downsize, affordable housing means saving a hundred thousand or so.

To a first time buyer weighing the pros and cons of what a 2500 sq,ft house with dueling lawns and a double garage at 600K vs a small foot print townhome at 500K the difference is called affordability.

The problem is that we do not have that option in Tsawwassen because there are no townhomes!

Ries thinks that his pleasantville bedroom community living is a sought after vision for all.

Guess what?....it isn’t!

Many people understand the benefits living within a small footprint and want to live their lives beyond the excesses that Ries covets so dearly.

It’s time that we had a chance to benefit from the housing choices that so many other communities have.

Affordability and the "ludicrous" notion of food security

Harvey Enchin dives in to the real causes of astronomical real estate prices in Metro Vancouver. Taxes, add on's and the ALR all contribute to a problem that isn't going away any time soon.

Enchin's idea about subsidizing farmland through development is a good idea that needs testing.

Take a look at the Jan 30 Vancouver Sun.

Here is another piece of ridiculousness!

There is a "Southlands in the ALR" petition online that currently has260 "signatures". Many of them have comments. One or two of these comments are informed enough to consider as valid commentary but the majority are not.

The majority of the comments paint cliche -  Once farmland is gone it is gone forever, the Southlands are going to be underwater due to climate change, food security, yada yada.

This is one of the most recent and best:

"“Please don’t spoil this beautiful wildlife sanctuary  by building homes or apts. It is so rare these days to enjoy places like this and it is what makes us want to visit Canada because of the unspoiled scenic places to unwind and de-stress and enjoy the natural beauty of the land. Please leave this beautiful piece of land as it is and let us continue to enjoy its beauty and peace.”

Petaluma, California

You would think that the manager of this 'throw enough at the wall site' would at least have the decency to remind its contributors that the lands in question are private!

There are no tours for anyone here. No vistiors from BC, Canada or Petaluma California are allowed. What a joke!
